Today I was driving around in town and it suddenly hit me that Fall has arrived. I do love the Fall, with all the colors and the quietness or stillness in the air, but somehow I missed Summer this year. And I know the rest of the family missed it too (no warm days filled with swimming in the lakes..)
The last couple of months have been really busy for our family. In July we moved from Seattle to Eindhoven, but we did not have a real place to stay yet. So our Summer was spent driving from the South of the Netherlands to the North (and in between) and back, and staying in different houses (family, friends and vacation rentals). And the weather didn't work with us, after a really long and warm Spring, which we didn't get to experience, the weather turned cold and stayed that way all Summer long.
Finally, in the beginning of September we moved into our own home. It was strange to be back in this house again after being away for three years; familiar and new at the same time. For me it also had a sad feeling to it, hard to describe, but almost like the past three years did not happen. It seems to me that everything in our little street has remained the same. I think we have grown as a family, we were changed by the process of adjusting in a foreign country, by the beautiful surroundings and most important by all the people we've gotten acquainted with in Seattle. But these changes do not show! And how easy it is to fall back to your old habits and ways of doing things. Just turn back the clock and fall asleep again.

Maybe that's the biggest challenge for all of us; to keep going forward and build on the things you have learned, to not look back too often but most of all to stay awake in this life.
